Nature Play Sessions

Nurture a love for nature, one playful moment at a time.

There are no sessions currently scheduled - feel free to add your email at the bottom of this page to know when the next one is on.

When do we run them?
These sessions are very ad-hoc while we still have young children at home, we aim to host them once a month but we take a bit of a break over the colder months. We will post on our socials and our email list when a new session is announced.

What age are they best suited for?
There is no strict age limit, but our sessions are best suited for tamariki 9 months - 5 years. You know your child and their abilities best, and how much they would be able to get out of the session.

Where are the sessions held?
We always aim to hold our sessions in a leafy, pram-accessible park with shade, toilets, and free parking. We have mostly held them at Risingholme Park in Opawa, and Heathcote Valley Community Centre.

Do I need to bring anything?
Just the essentials depending on the weather - a hat, sunscreen, water bottle, nappies, rain jacket, spare change of clothes for the kids etc. Feel free to bring your picnic rug if you’d like to sit down to enjoy morning tea, lunch or just have a little break.

What happens if it’s raining?
We try not to let a bit of rain put us off, but in the case of extremely unfavourable weather, the session will either be rescheduled or cancelled with refunds.

What if I can no longer make it to a session?
Please let us know as soon as possible so we can give your spot to someone else. We will offer a make-up token if the participant cancels with at least 48 hours notice. If less than 48 hours notice is given, we are unable to offer refunds or credits for cancelled bookings.

What to expect:
Each of our sessions offer a variety of nature-inspired, play opportunities.

We take inspiration from the seasons and tailor our activities to what is happening in the environment around us. We try to change it up each time, but you will typically find stations like water play, potion play, playdough, painting, nature crafts, bubbles, ice smash and more.

These sessions are designed to immerse children in a vibrant, nature-inspired environment that engages their sensory systems.

The goal is to support children’s learning and growth through hands-on interaction with natural elements. Participants will take part in a variety of activities that encourage sensory exploration, allowing them to see, touch, smell, hear, and even taste different aspects of the natural world.

Objectives:

  • Promote Sensory Development: Offer opportunities for children to engage all five senses—sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell— this is important because our sensory system affects the way we interact with our environment.
  • Encourage Connection with Nature: Help children develop a greater appreciation for the natural world through hands-on learning experiences.
  • Support Social Interaction: Enable cooperative play and communication among children as they participate in group activities. Through these sensory-rich experiences in a natural environment, children can build vital skills while benefiting from the therapeutic effects of outdoor play.
